Student-led Event Garners TV Coverage

In their Nov. 14-15 news broadcasts, WHAM-TV, WHEC-TV and WROC-TV highlighted an MCC student-led event aimed at promoting the well-being of refugee children and helping build a more inclusive community.

Refugee families across Greater Rochester enjoyed an evening of interactive play and a resource fair Nov. 14 on MCC’s Downtown Campus. Activities for children ages 7 to 19 included hands-on demonstrations led by MCC Chemistry Club members, board games and coloring kits. Other event attendees met with representatives of local outreach groups — including Mary’s Place, Refugees Helping Refugees, and Rochester Refugee Resettlement Services — to learn about various community supports available.

In all, six MCC clubs and organizations participated in the free event. Led by the MCC chapter members of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, the event is part of the chapter’s 2022-23 project demonstrating the positive role that increasing access to supervised play can have in enhancing coping skills and the well-being of refugee children.
