The Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center Announces Group Study Sessions for PSY-101 and Math Now Running

The Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center (TAAC) is happy to announce the return of Embedded Group Study Sessions for PSY-101, and, NEW as of fall 2023, the launch of Understandable Math Sessions for MTH-096, MTH-098, MTH-104, MTH-160, and MTH-165! Sessions will be accessible face-to-face and over Zoom. Please find schedules and information below.

What is Embedded Group Study for PSY-101?

These sessions, requested by the psychology department, will be led by adjuncts within the department and tutors in the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center. Open to all students in any section of PSY-101, these sessions encompass interactive modules to engage students in active learning, collaborative study, and activities across multiple learning modalities. The goal is to help foster independence and develop skills that can help improve student learning and course outcomes. These sessions combine How to learn with What to learn--with greater emphasis on how to learn.

Brighton Campus: 

Day Sessions: Led by Professor Serenity Della Porta, in the Psychology Resource Center, 11-232

  • Wednesday, September 13th, 12 to 2pm
  • Wednesday, September 27th, 12 to 2pm
  • Wednesday, October 11th, 12 to 2pm
  • Wednesday, October 25th, 12 to 2pm
  • Wednesday, November 8th, 12 to 2pm
  • Wednesday, November 29th, 12 to 2pm
  • Wednesday, December 13th, 12 to 2pm

Evening Sessions: Led by Peer Tutor, Michelle Kimball, in the Psychology Resource Center, 11-232

  • Every Monday school is in session 6:30 to 7:30pm

Online Sessions: Led by Professor Jessica Lanzafame (Zoom information outlined below.)

*Please note: Professor Lanzafame will not be conducting sessions between the dates of 10/23 thru 11/04. She will be resuming sessions Monday, 11/06.

What is an Understandable Math Session?

The Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center (TAAC) is starting a new program, as requested by the math department. Led by Carlo Atene, the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center Lead Mathematics Tutor, this program has been developed to support students’ success in MTH-096, MTH-098, MTH-104, MTH-160, and MTH-165. Each of the courses will be aligned with a course specific 1-hour session each week, starting soon, and running through the end of the semester. The individuals leading each session are there to facilitate learning (not teach). The goal is to build an interactive environment where students can interact with material in a safe space. 

Sessions will be built around 3 components: 

  1. Soft skill focus on topics, such as how to study and exploring how each student thinks.
  2. Core skill relative to each course, such as reading word problems and fractions.
  3. Open forum. While it may be necessary to teach some content here, the goal is to get students to help each other.
