Program Director, Instructor Interviewed for Media Report on Nurse Educator Shortage

WXXI News' report on the nurse educator shortage impacting the Finger Lakes region and communities across the nation included interviews with Marcy Lynch, Ed.D., director of health care programs at MCC’s Downtown Campus, and with instructor Nafe Mutuwawira, RN.

Qualified nurse educators are in high demand at a time when the need for certified nurse assistants, licensed practical nurses and registered nurses continues growing.

Key takeaways:

Nafe -- “If we are having a shortage in the hospitals, for us to be able to combat that, we need to train more nurses. If we cannot train them, that shortage would never end.”

Dr. Lynch -- “It seems like post-COVID we have this trend of nurses, that might have typically become instructors, staying as nurses because they are getting higher hourly rate wages.”
