Spectrum News Promotes FWD Center Offerings

Spectrum News 1 visited the Finger Lakes Workforce Development (FWD) Center on the day of its community open house on Jan. 14 and interviewed Siva Visveswaran, program director of Software and Information Technology at MCC.

Siva explained how MCC is using alternate and virtual reality technologies to encourage students to explore advanced manufacturing as a career. These technologies are being used in our region's smart factories as well as in medical facilities.

Several key takeaways from the interview:

  • “It seems like the youth has this idea that manufacturing is old, it’s hard, and they also sometimes think it doesn’t pay as much. But all of that is wrong.”
  • “If you go to a smart factory today or a manufacturing plant, they’re using these AR technologies to augment a person’s capability and work.”
  • "Over time, schools will deploy all of these technologies in their curriculum and in their classrooms.”

The report was broadcast in communities across the state that Spectrum News serves, including Buffalo, Central New York, Southern Tier and Albany.
