Liberty Partnerships Program and Upward Bound Host 1st In-Person College Bound Kickoff in 2 Years

Each fall the Liberty Partnerships Program hosts our annual College Bound Kickoff event for students enrolled in our program. LPP serves students grades 7-12 in the Rochester City school district, by providing them with by-weekly tutoring, college and career prep, as well as community exploration opportunities. This year, LPP returned to an in-person event after two years remote due to COVID, and partnered with Upward Bound!

The room was filled with students and their families from both programs. Presenters from MCC, Nazareth College and St John Fisher University presented on not only their specific college offerings, but also about the general processes and procedures for applying to and attending college. Our guest from MCC introduced the multiple campuses MCC has, as well as a blanket overview of how to apply to colleges. She introduced different terms students may come across while applying, and encouraged them to all set up a professional email address specifically for college correspondence.

Our partners from St. John Fisher University shared about HEOP/EOP programs across New York State, and then used SJFU as an example to show what “sticker price” is for a college, and how applying for various opportunity programs and scholarships can bring the price to a more affordable range. Did you know students who are first generation college students from the RCSD can qualify to have nearly half of their bill covered at Fisher?? We do now!

Lastly, for the 3rd year in a row our representative from Nazareth College broke down terms, processes, and provided support for fears surrounding the financial aid process. Financial aid can be terrifying, and serves as a common barrier for many students to accessing college. With the help of our partners, one student said she was leaving feeling more confident, and as though college was within her reach now, despite the initial shock of the cost.

LPP and UB would like to thank our partners from the three institutions, and we cannot wait to coordinate visits to each campus this spring!

LPP is funded by the New York State Department of Education.
