Quotes That Inspire
This final edition of 'Quotes That Inspire' before the Thanksgiving holiday comes to us courtesy of Associate Professor of Biology Jim Cronmiller:
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?" - Martin Luther King Jr.
There may be decades between when Dr. King made this statement and today, but the value of its message resonates with an energy I find particularly poignant at this annual collective time of gratitude. So many have been impacted so negatively by this pandemic, can we answer Reverend King's inquiry with a reply that allows us to look ourselves squarely in the mirror with acceptance? Thank you for reminding us, Jim, that every day provides an opportunity to do something for others.
Leaders of MCC's Alpha Theta Iota chapter of Phi Theta Kappa provide an inspiring response to Dr. King's question. Yesterday, PTK members delivered holiday meals -- including certificates to purchase turkeys and hams at local grocers -- to students in need. Their efforts are part of the chapter's College Project which identifies and helps students overcome barriers to academic success, including food insecurity. This Thanksgiving, 100 families will not have to worry about putting a holiday meal on the table thanks to PTK members.
Your collective dedication to the success of our students is also a remarkable reply to Dr. King's question. This year, MCC has been tested and, from my perspective, you have come through as a shining beacon of hope. It has been a true honor to get to know and work with you. For that opportunity, I am grateful.
I look forward to joining you at today's MCC Town Hall at noon. If you are unable to attend virtually, please safely enjoy your Thanksgiving. As The New York Times stated, 'Tiny is the new BIG this Thanksgiving.' See you in December!
