MCC Interviewed About In-person/Online Learning

MCC was among the local colleges/universities interviewed about in-person and online learning for the Rochester Business Journal's Feb. 17 edition.

Kelsey Bright, assistant to the provost and vice president of academic and student affairs, discussed the various learning modalities MCC offers students this spring semester as well as how courses were delivered before and during the pandemic.  Dr. Terry Keys, associate vice president for instructional services, provided information on online degree and certificate programs.

A few key takeaways from Kelsey's interview:

  • MCC “continues to stay flexible” in terms of course delivery.
  • In fall 2022,* more than 60% of courses were offered face-to-face and approximately 65% of students took at least one online course, including hybrids, to fit their personal schedules. The data show that while a majority of classes are being offered in person, the number of online/hybrid learners has increased from fall 2019.
    • In fall 2019, over 80% of courses were offered in person and approximately 34% of students took at least one online course, including hybrids.
    • In fall 2020 – during the pandemic — approximately 75% of courses were delivered remotely and online with approximately 75% of students taking at least one online course, including hybrids.
  • Student-parents and students age 25-plus said they plan to take the same number, more, or all online courses in the future while non-parents and students age 24 and under said they plan to take fewer or no online courses, according to the findings of a 2021 MCC survey.
  • “The pandemic really changed and challenged us in a good way to serve our students and our community in a new way. One of the strengths of being a community college is being able to provide accessible, high-quality learning experiences to meet our students where they’re at.”
