The MCC Library and Academic Services are hosting a faculty and staff book drive gathering on April 30, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in the North Atrium. Please join us for coffee where faculty and staff will be encouraged to donate books and share a message on an Inspiring Everyday Bookmark that describes how the book inspired them. This message, along with the book, will be passed on to the new owner. This event will support donating books to K-12 students in the Rochester City School District on behalf of the Rochester Education Foundation. Monetary donations will be accepted at the event.
Dr. Holmes, vice president of student services, shares the book that inspired him as a child:
"As a child, the book I read that had the most impact on me was Champion Dog, Prince Tom, written by Jean Fritz and Tom Clute. As a child, I really didn’t find much pleasure in reading, but, for some reason, I ordered this book in late elementary school during one of our fundraisers. Upon its arrival, I decided to read it because it was about a dog - I love dogs. After reading it once, I read it again.
This book was fascinating to me because it’s about a dog that was the only golden-colored pup from a litter of eight; the rest of the litter was black. This dog was the runt of the litter, so of course he was picked last. Nonetheless, this dog turned out to be a champion with whatever he attempted. The book impacted me because it really drives home the fact that no matter the situation, one can still do great things in life. When others say that you can’t or won’t be successful, you can work to prove them wrong."
What book inspired you as a child? Be sure to bring it to the book drive gathering!
