SUNY Learning Network Wins Online Education Award

The Sloan-C consortium of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation recently announced the
State University of New York's SUNY Learning Network as the recipient of its
Award for Excellence in Institution-Wide ALN Programming (Asynchronous Learning
Networks (ALN) are networks for anytime/anywhere learning).

Sloan-C recognized the SUNY Learning Network, citing its primary goal of
bringing SUNY's diverse, high-quality instructional programs within the reach
of learners everywhere. In the 2001-02 academic year, the SUNY Learning Network
enabled more than 40,000 student enrollments in 2,500 online courses. The
fifty-five SUNY campuses participating in the SUNY Learning Network now offer
fifty-five complete online degree and certificate programs.

"The SUNY Learning Network continues to garner national recognition," said SUNY
Chancellor Robert L. King. "We are very proud of our online model, utilizing
technology to bring the high quality courses taught by our excellent faculty to
students everywhere."

"The recognition by Sloan-C is a significant honor," said University Provost
Peter D. Salins. "The SLN is a program that faculty are dedicated to, and that
consistently garners student and faculty satisfaction scores well over 90
percent."

Sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Sloan-C is a consortium of more
that 200 academic institutions dedicated to improving online education in the
areas of learning effectiveness, access, affordability, and student and faculty
satisfaction. Other recipients of this years' awards include the University of
Illinois and the University of California at Berkeley. The awards will be
presented at the 8th Sloan-C International Conference on Asynchronous Learning
Networks in Orlando, FL on November 8, 2002.

The State University of New York is the largest university system in the United
States with more than 388,000 students enrolled in more than 5,100 fields of
study on 64 campuses. To learn more about how SUNY creates opportunity visit
