Tech Tip: Don't Miss any Important Email

College email messages are evaluated for potential spam by Microsoft’s message hygiene engine, which moves messages identified as suspicious to the Junk Email folder automatically. There are several layers of filtering that messages pass through during this evaluation. It is possible that an expected and legitimate email could get caught and put into a user’s Junk Email folder or that a potentially dangerous phishing email can be delivered to a user’s inbox. For this reason, we encourage everyone:

  • To stop, look and think before clicking on any links or opening any attachments to a message and
  • To check your mailbox Junk Email folder regularly, especially in situations where anticipated messages are not being received as expected.

If you find a legitimate email in your junk mail, you can add them to your safe sender list.

Add a Sender (other than @monroecc.edu) to the Safe Senders List in Microsoft Outlook:

  1. On the Home tab, in the Delete group, select Junk
  2. From the drop-down list, select Junk E-mail Options
  3. Select the Safe Senders tab
  4. Click Add...
  5. In the Add address or domain dialog box, type an email address or domain
  6. Click OK

Mark as Not Junk While reading an email in your Junk Email folder:

  1. Right-click on the email message
  2. Scroll down to Junk
  3. Select Not Junk (You will have the option to “always trust email from ‘sender@xxx.xxx’” to ensure those emails are delivered to  your Inbox in the future.)

Check and remove email addresses from Blocked Senders List:

  1. Login to your Outlook account on the web through http://outlook.com/owa/monroecc.edu
  2. Go to settings. (Gear icon in upper right corner.)
  3. In search box type: blocked.
  4. Click on Blocked senders and domains.
  5. Search for the email address that you cannot receive mail from to ensure that it is not in the list.
  6. To remove a sender from the blocked list, click on the trash can icon at far right that is on the same line of that sender.
