Technical Support Tips: Web Browsing Keyboard Shortcuts

Have you ever accidentally closed a tab on your browser and had trouble getting back to the page? Have you ever wanted to open a link in a new tab or a new window? Here are some skills for Chrome, Firefox and Edge that may improve your browsing experience.

To open a link in a new tab press Ctrl and click on the link. (This might be useful in the myMCC portal).

If you accidentally close a tab in a web browser, on your keyboard press Ctrl + Shift + t and the tab will reopen.

To open a link in a new window press Shift and click on the link.

To open your home page(s) press Alt + Home.

To zoom in on a page press Ctrl + Mouse wheel up or press Ctrl + + (Ctrl and the plus sign).

To zoom out on a page press Ctrl + Mouse wheel down or press Ctrl + - (Ctrl and the minus sign).

Press Ctrl + 0 (that’s a zero not an o) to go to the default zoom level.

To open the clear cache window, click Ctrl + Shift + Delete.

To open your history or close it, press Ctrl + h.

To open a new tab press Ctrl + t.

To open a new window press Ctrl + n.

To quickly search for a term found in a webpage:

  • Highlight the word or phrase using your mouse.
  • Right click on the selection.
  • Select ‘Search <search engine> for “the word or phrase”’ in Chrome and Firefox .

To open an incognito window in Chrome press Ctrl + Shift + n.

Opening a lot of tabs? You can group tabs in Chrome to stay organized. To group tabs select the tabs you want to use by holding down the Shift or Ctrl key and clicking on desired tabs. Once selected right click on a selected tab and then click Add tab to new group. Name the group and pick a color. To expand or collapse the tabs click on the group name. You can add more tabs by dragging and dropping them into the group.
