Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tina Rosenberg believes peer pressure may hold the social cure to many of the world’s most intractable problems. This counterintuitive position is the central tenet of her new book, Join the Club: How Peer Pressure Can Transform the World. She will speak on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at noon and 7 p.m. in the Warshof Conference Center, Flynn Campus Center (Monroe A&B). Tickets, free with MCC ID and $10 for the general public, are available at www.monroecctickets.com, at the Campus Center Service Desk in the Flynn Campus Center (Bldg. 3), or at the Damon City Campus Bookstore.
In his New York Times Book Review, Jeffrey Sachs wrote, “At a time when America is grappling with a decline in trust, and when cooperation across nations and cultures is extremely difficult, Rosenberg’s book is timely, thoughtful and important.” Rosenberg’s book illustrates the enormous potential that peer pressure holds for helping to enact social change, improve education, oust dictators, curb smoking, and more.
The author, the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, writes a New York Times online column on solutions to social problems.
