Public Safety Steering Wheel Lock Giveaway for Students and Staff

Nationwide and locally, a social media trend is resulting in an increase in motor vehicle thefts, especially of Kia and Hyundai vehicles. Some of these vehicles do not contain an internal immobilization device, resulting in criminals being able to steal the vehicle quickly without keys or key fobs by using a screwdriver and a USB cord. Immobilization devices, such as a steering wheel lock, may help deter the thefts.

MCC Public Safety and Parking Services have been able to obtain a supply of these steering wheel locks from Brighton PD and also from Hyundai Auto manufacturers. We will provide these locks to students and staff who drive Hyundai and Kia vehicles, as supplies last.  There is no charge for these locks.

To obtain a steering wheel lock contact Parking Services in person in Building 21-140, via phone (585-292-2700) or e-mail parkingrequests@monroecc.edu. Bring a copy of your registration when picking up the lock.

The MCC Public Safety office suggests that owners of Hyundai or Kia vehicles contact their respective dealerships for information on anti-theft software upgrades that may prevent these thefts.

As always, we ask the MCC community to be on the lookout for suspicious activity, and notify Public Safety immediately at 585-292-2911 (or X2911 on an internal phone) if you suspect anything out of the ordinary. Please feel free to also reach out with any questions or concerns, and thank you for playing your role in keeping our campus community safe
