MCC Team Takes Home Grand Prize for DeepRacer Challenge

On Wednesday, March 4th, Rochester-area college students in computer science, software development, computing, engineering and machine learning used advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to compete in the DeepRacer Challenge, a self-driving racecar challenge, hosted at Rochester Institute of Technology.

To participate, students built and trained AI algorithms using Amazon SageMaker software, to program a self-driving car. Teams were judged by official Amazon Web Services (AWS) rules: the fastest car that stays on the track the most, wins. The MCC team clocked in at 9.66 seconds.

Qualifying teams from RIT, University of Rochester, and MCC competed for the Championship Cup and a Grand Prize of a Sportscar Weekend at Watkins Glen.

The MCC DeepRacer team included:
• Kael Guimento-Hopenwasser, Computer Science
• Daniel Ly, Computer Systems Technology
• Ian Teague, Computer Science
• Peter Owens, Computer Science
• Mentor: Jeff Dunker, ICT Department Chair

Please join me in congratulating our winning team!
