Over the Christmas Break we will be making the final upgrade to the campus building electrical system. This upgrade will affect buildings 2 and 3. At the conclusion of the project, we will have a new, or up-to-date electrical distribution system in place in every building.
To accomplish this, we will need to interrupt power to buildings 2 and 3 several times over the next three weeks. We are working closely with the contractor to minimize the risks of turning off power in the cold weather, and to increase the probability that the work will all be completed on time and satisfactorily during the holiday period. To accommodate the contractor and our own busy campus schedules, we have planned the following power interruptions:
December 16th 6:00 pm to midnight – Building 2 power shutdown to do preparation work.
December 16th 11:00 pm to 3:00 am on 12/17. – Building 2 and 3 power shutdown to do preparation work.
December 22nd 6:00 pm to 5:00 am on 12/23 – Building 2 and 3 power shutdown to transfer buildings over to temporary generators. They will remain on temporary generators for the week.
December 31 (Approximately) Hours to be determined – Power shutdown again to transfer power from the temporary generators to the new power system equipment. This will be done as soon as the new system is operational, and will occur at any time of the day.
During these power outages, buildings 2 and 3 will be dark and items plugged into the outlets will be off. We strongly suggest that computers and peripherals be turned off during the break week to prevent any damage from unexpected electrical events. Good quality refrigerators should remain cold during the outages. Areas normally served by emergency power will continue to operate on emergency power during the outages.
Please let us know if these plans conflict with any events or other activities on campus. Any questions regarding the project can be directed to Blaine Grindle or Jim Charlton in Facilities.
