MCC Moves to a Self-Funded Health Insurance Plan

I am pleased to announce that MCC will be moving to a self-funded health insurance plan, beginning on January 1, 2023. MCC healthcare participants will not experience a change in coverage or disruption with this move. Excellus will still be the third-party administrator and claims processing will remain using the Excellus networks and systems. Current plan design, co-pays, preferred (or your choice of) physicians, and drug coverage will remain unchanged.

Though the option to move to a self-funded health insurance plan has been explored for years, it never was the appropriate time to make the switch. As a result of the large insurance rate increase for 2022, the College formed a Healthcare Committee, comprised of union leadership and College management representatives. Its mission was to review options on how to sustain the current level of health benefits. It found, that in order maintain current level of employee health benefits, now was the time to move to a self-funded insurance plan and I accept their recommendation.

This type of change may produce many questions. To help address these, the College will be holding a series of employee healthcare meetings, and has created an FAQ document. These meetings are scheduled from Noon-12:50 pm in Rm 8-300, and will be live streamed as well, on:

The FAQ document is attached.

These meetings, as well as the FAQ, can provide useful information about self-funded health plans, their benefits, and other possible questions you might have. I am confident that the move to a self-funded insurance plan, is best for both our employees and the College.

Thank you.
