TCC: Call for Proposals for the June Teaching & Learning Conference

For this academic year, the Teaching & Creativity Center has invited faculty and staff to explore a strengths-based approach to teaching and learning with our theme Ditching Deficit-Based Pedagogy: Leveraging Student Assets. It’s an important aspect of equity work because, as Equity Literacy Institute founder Paul Gorski puts it, “Equity cannot live where deficit ideology lives.” We’ve been engaging with this topic through monthly conversations, book groups, several sessions at the Winter Teaching Institute, and an on-demand digital library of resources for independent learning.

Now we invite you to share your knowledge and practices with colleagues at the TCC’s annual Teaching & Learning Conference which will be held at the Downtown Campus on June 9, 2023. Whether it’s something you’ve been working on recently or have been doing for years, don’t keep it to yourself!

We are accepting proposals from faculty and staff for presentations that will in any way address the following broad questions:

  • What does an asset-based approach to students (and colleagues) look like in your classrooms, offices, departments, and disciplines--and how might others apply it to their own contexts?

  • Which teaching practices, curricular designs, assessment models, organizational frameworks, etc., best counteract the damages of a deficit-model of education?

  • What does a shift from a deficit-model to a strengths-model enable, in terms of engagement and connection?

Presentations can be in-person, remote, hybrid, or pre-recorded for asynchronous viewing. They can be solo or group endeavors. Your proposal should include a working title and a brief description of the session’s topic(s) and aims. Please submit your proposal for the June Teaching & Learning Conference.

If you do not want to present in a standalone session, but would be willing to participate in an opening panel session with other colleagues about strengths-based, equity-minded practices, there is a place to indicate so on the form.

Proposals will be accepted now through March 17, by 5:00 PM
