How to View the Solar Eclipse Safely
In case you have not heard, on Monday, August 21, 2017, there will be a solar eclipse over the entire United States. In Rochester, the Moon will begin to cover the Sun at 1:14pm. At the moment of greatest eclipse, 2:36pm, 70 percent of the Sun will be covered. After greatest eclipse, the Moon will gradually uncover the Sun, with the eclipse ending for Rochester viewers at 3:52pm.
If you plan to view the eclipse, proper eye protection is essential to preventing serious and potentially permanent vision damage. Ophthalmologists agree that eye injuries can occur instantaneously, and the eyes can experience discomfort within several hours after exposure. Signs of damage to watch for include sensitivity to light, eye pain or loss of vision in one or both eyes.
The following important safety information regarding viewing the eclipse is provided by NASA.
