The Collegial Stickball League

The MCC Collegial Stickball League is looking for individuals [or teams] able to take and give a good-natured deriding [friendly trash-talk], and skin a knee while dodging authorities. Besides being an opportunity to practice improvisation, participation supports the College’s Vision and Mission to, “Develop and implement the College’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) plan to create a supportive and collaborative culture which nurtures a sense of belonging and being valued, and supports the health and wellness of both students and employees.” In addition, being part of the League is also a great highlight for anyones’s AFDR [And who doesn’t love a good report?].

Traditionally a street game, related to baseball, stickball is a spontaneous impromptu game usually played in urban areas of the United States. Equipment consists of a broom handle, a rubber ball and two to four makeshift bases [manhole covers, tires, or flattened cardboard boxes]. The rules [if any] are derived from baseball and modified to fit the situation. Players or teams are generally challenged to show up beforehand, but unlike controlled games, there’s no obligation or commitment to play. These pick-up games are played with a less rigid set of rules, which makes them more disorganized and unstructured. Without any formal rule-book-thumpin’ or regulation regurgitation, Stickball is often more improvisational, creative and fun [Just like teaching].

Stop by BC room 4-104 to sign up [on the door], or email, jdowner@monroecc.edu to get on the Collegial Stickball League’s email list. Teams can consist of, as few as 1, or as many as 43 players. You’ll need a serious sense of humor, and be open to bending rules. There are no guidelines or guarantees, and everyone is welcome to play. “Just ask your Mother.”
