Creating a Safe and Supportive Campus Community to Accommodate Students with Hidden Disabilities

The latest National Center for Education Statistics reports that more than 200,000 students entering college have some type of learning disability. Invisible disabilities, also called “hidden” disabilities, are the most common type of disability among college students. Invisible disabilities include but are not limited to; cognitive impairment, the autism spectrum, chronic illnesses like chronic fatigue or chronic pain, deaf and or hard of hearing, vision impairments, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more. More than one-third of college students with invisible or hidden disabilities do not disclose their diagnoses due to the stigma.

The Counseling Center, Disability Services & Health Services office presents the following webinar, which highlights challenges and opportunities students with invisible disabilities face.

Some key components you will learn during this webinar are:

  1. Laws pertaining to universities providing accommodations for students.
  2. The importance of confidentiality as a part of the accommodation process.
  3. Universal design and creating a more inclusive environment for students.
  4. Accommodations beyond the classroom.
  5. How stigma/bullying hinder students seeking accommodations.
  6. Resources for students with invisible disabilities.
