Service learning students assist in a culture and art show at Arts and Cultural Council of Rochester

Twenty MCC Service Learning students are assisting in" Nowruz: Persian New Year," a local culture and art show. Students in a sociology class taught by Shahin Monshipour will be conducting interviews with members of the Iranian and Afghan community. Marj Crum’s students are producing art work and posters for the program.

Funded by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), the exhibit will showcase the works of Persian-American folk artists from the Rochester Area. These works relate to the history, traditions and symbols of Persian culture surrounding the celebration of Nowruz: the Persian New Year. Monshipour is the curatorial consultant for the show which will run from March 4 to March 26 at the Arts Council Gallery located on 227 N. Goodman  St.

On March 6th, March 12th, and March 19th, the Council will hold receptions from 5:00-8:00 p.m. The receptions will feature Persian snacks, music, and an introductory lecture. The introductory lecture on March 6th will be presented  by Monshipour. Faculty members who may be interested in guided tours and lectures for their students during the day time may contact her at 473.2945.

The Arts Council Gallery is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
