Updated SUNY General Education Guidance

SUNY has updated guidance relative to General Education. Please see the attached. Pages 4 and 5 provide an Executive Summary of the recent updates.

Highlights:

  • Gen Ed is a SUNY designation and LAS is a State Ed requirement. While most SUNY Gen Ed courses are expected to meet SED LAS requirements, the updated guidance does not mandate that Gen Ed courses fulfill LAS criteria. Some courses may meet Gen Ed but not LAS.
  • Be mindful of NYSED LAS guidance as Program Revisions are being developed.
  • SUNY can provide feedback regarding whether courses appear to meet SED LAS criteria in cases where it's difficult to determine
  • A.A. and A.S. program revisions require 30 SUNY Gen Ed credits, A.A.S. require 20
  • A.A. programs require 45 LAS credits out of a total of 60, A.S. programs 30 LAS credits out of 60, A.A.S. programs 20 LAS credits out of 60.

Program Revision Form Update

  • The Program Revision Form has a new enhanced feature. Instead of having to complete a separate attachment for a Program Audit, Bob Reynolds built into the form a Program Audit that auto fills course information from the Course Distribution portion of the form. Thank you Bob!
  • If a current program proposal has already been submitted, and an attachment completed, completing the new Program Revision Form is not required.
