HSM 180 - Social Media, Issues and Impacts*

Summer Session I: May 26—June 27

MTWR - 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Course Description:

As an introduction to the field of social media and social networking, this course will define and explain social media and its impact on personal, organizational and global security. The course will address issues related to the responsible and effective use of social media, and the exploitation of information for social, economic, political and criminal gain. The course will explore aggregation of Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) information using on-line tools and freeware, including an introduction to social network analysis (SNA) to demonstrate the potential social, economic and political impact of social media. Students will be introduced to advanced search techniques, Application Program Interface (API), geolocation, metadata/exifdata, crowdsourcing and assembling digital footprints as examples of gathering social media data.  3 Lecture hours, 3 Credit hours
