Help Tame the M-Drive!

The “M” in M-Drive doesn’t stand for monster. Yet increasing demands have seen one of the most vital resources of the MCC community grow from manageable to massive. Left unattended, M-Drive storage space will run out by the beginning of the Fall 2004 semester.

In an ongoing effort to avoid a potential crisis, ETS will begin implementing a quota system TOMORROW that will help manage current and future resources on the M-Drive.

This first phase will implement a quota system on the M:\Users directory only. During this phase, a short grace period will be in effect. Users will receive automated e-mails informing them they are nearing or have exceeded a predetermined storage limit. While users who have exceeded their quota will not be prohibited from accessing the M-Drive, they will be required to justify the need for additional space.

AFTER THE GRACE PERIOD, THE QUOTA SYSTEM ON THE M:\Users Directory WILL BE ENFORCED AND WILL PROHIBIT SAVING ADDITIONAL DATA IN THAT DIRECTORY UNTIL SPACE HAS BEEN FREED OR ADDITIONAL STORAGE HAS BEEN APPROVED.

Although you will not be contacted unless you are nearing or have exceeded the quota, you can help by removing personal items from the M-Drive and storing non-essential files in other mediums (CD’s and DVD’s). To assist you in these efforts, ETS will offer additional training courses and Brown Bag Sessions on other storage mediums during the Fall 2004 semester.

The established M-Drive storage limits are:
·       250 megabytes per individual user
·       500 megabytes per course directory
·       1000 megabytes (1 gigabyte) per department directory
