Engaging Students of Color Webinar Series "A National Consortium on College Men of Color"

It is clear that students of color have significantly different academic, social, cultural, and psychological worlds than their white peers. In their 1991 book “How College Affects Students,” Ernest Pascarella and Patrick Terenzini explained that these experiences are either hindered or helped by the faculty, staff, and students they encounter.  The interactions that students of color have, particularly with the white majority, can encourage a student’s participation in academic and co-curricular life or can create feelings of stress and a need for isolation.  In Shaun Harper and Stephen John Quaye’s current book, “Student Engagement in Higher Education: Theoretical Perspectives and Practical Approaches for Diverse Populations,” they reiterate the challenges and support these students need from student affairs professionals. To enhance student success, they recommend creating engaging campus environments for the changing student.  But how do we intentionally do this as student affairs and academic professionals?  New students often find themselves challenged and transformed by this world of esoteric traditions and invisible assumptions, where one’s expectations are tested and undermined, often—but not always—to the good.  At MCC we have to engage a different student population which includes (low-income students, students of color, international students, veterans, students with disabilities, LGBT students, religious, transfer, athletes students and adult learners).

The MCC Diversity Council and the Office of Student Life and Leadership Development would like to invite you to attend our series “A National Consortium on College Men of Color” webinars.  The series starts September 24th, 2015 with an Information Sharing Session with other community college leaders discussing the latest promising practices being employed at different colleges.  This webinar will be held on September 24, 2015 from 1pm to 2pm  in the Forum, Flynn Campus Center (3-130), (facilitated by Clayton Jones) and at the Damon City Campus room 5057 (facilitated by Michael Johnson).  For a list of webinars, please download the attachment or you can pick up a brochure in the Office of Student Life and Leadership Development (3-126).
