Clarification Regarding MCC's Global Learning Requirement

The implementation of the new SUNY General Education framework includes a requirement for programs to include global learning. MCC’s global learning requirement encourages students to engage with diverse perspectives and to analyze the structures and interrelationships among global communities and their impact on sustainable systems. We want to minimize confusion by providing clarity regarding the three options that meet this requirement.

Programs can satisfy the global learning requirement by one of the following:

  • Include any WHGA course within their program
  • Include any WLNG course within their program - The implementation of the global learning requirement is a work-in-progress. We are provisionally allowing 100-level and ASL courses to count for the flexibility of program design.  The Curriculum Office will work with WLNG faculty to enhance global content and revisit CLO’s.
  • Programs can also infuse global learning into one or more program courses

Programs previously vetted through the curriculum process that initially listed a requirement as “SUNY WLNG that also satisfy Global Learning” have been updated.  These programs now indicate that any SUNY WLNG can fulfill the requirement.

Faculty are encouraged to also consider incorporating other global learning opportunities. Recently, a global learning (GL) high-impact practice was approved.  As courses are approved for this designation, they provide an additional opportunity for global learning.  SUNY COIL courses also provide another option for global learning.

The global learning requirement is in keeping with [supports the fulfillment of] MCC’s Mission Statement.  Monroe Community College transforms lives and communities, fostering the success of diverse students through affordable and innovative academic, career, technical, and workforce development programs. Our shared work inspires and champions excellence in higher education and builds global engagement and understanding.
