Being Kind - A Message from the Civility Project

We often take being kind for granted. Whether we are busy running to our next meeting or running late to a class, it is easy to forget the people around us and only focus on our priorities.  In a place as large and bustling as MCC, it is important for us all to have a hand in making others feel respected and valued.  Simply holding the door open for the person behind you or smiling as you pass others in the hall can change someone’s day.

Civility, by definition, is a standard of courteous interaction between human beings, as well as their environment, as demonstrated through social interactions and ones perceived place in the world.  Being kind is at the forefront of making this community a more civil place.  Civility is showing respect, being kind, and being courteous to others.

Some Tips on Being Kind:

When you recognize a need, volunteer to do something about it.  Do not wait until you are asked.
Be empathetic and compassionate.  Do not cause distress, pain, or loss with your words and actions.
Listen to those who need a listening ear.  Listening to someone is a great act of kindness.
Keep asking yourself, if I were this person, what would I want others to do for me?
Everyone needs encouragement.  Ask yourself, what can I say that will be encouraging?
