The Demise of SIS--Be Prepared!!

I was in a meeting in the dare-you-to-try-to-find-us CAPP room and in the course of our problem solving we had to refer to some old data in SIS. It was really strange to see the old SIS screens come up and it occurred to me that I haven’t used SIS for several semesters. When I mentioned this to the other attendees I started hearing all kinds of stories of people still using SIS. Because old SIS war stories are much more interesting than solving 900 exclusion problems we went ‘off-agenda’ and talked about what would happen to these people when SIS was really dead and gone.

I’d like to say that this discussion filled me with so much concern for my fellow colleagues who might not be aware that the SIS crutch was going to disappear that I leaped to my keyboard to write an article alerting everyone to SIS’s demise. In reality I didn’t think about it again until Betsy asked me to write an article about the death of SIS. I guess I’m not much of a humanitarian.

The must-be-faced truth is that SIS WILL be gone the end of this month. Numerous arrangements to have reports archived and academic data transferred to Banner have taken place by the chronically under-acknowledged Computing staff. We think we have all the information bases covered. If there is historic information that you are worried might not be available when SIS is gone, please let Betsy know ASAP. We are getting down to the wire and once SIS is gone we will not be able to go back and capture this data.

If, like me, you haven’t even used SIS for ages, you don’t need to be concerned. You must have all the information you need in Banner. But if you have snuck into SIS in the last semester you need to make sure that whatever you are sneaking a look at is available in Banner. If you aren’t sure, put shame aside and check with Betsy. But do it soon. SIS will be gone at the end of February. Rumor is that it will take the snow and cold weather with it!
