For the 12th consecutive year, various staff from the 3rd floor of the Spina Administration Building celebrated National Poetry Month with a haiku slam on Friday, April 27, 2012. We thought we'd share our work with the college community.
(For those of you new to haiku, haiku is a very stylized form of poetry consisting of three line phrases with 5 / 7 / 5 syllables respectively. The theme is typically seasonal – i.e., passing of winter, arrival of spring.)
Green boughs bend deeply / Tangled whip of branches sway / Wind whoops with laughter
Five. Seven. Five. Done. / Sounds simply enough, really / But right words are tough.
Spring into action / Mow your lawn and trim the trees / Before the blizzard!
Highland Park in bloom / Gardener works on pansy bed / Patiently waiting
Happiness Lingers / On the belief that new life / Brings Sorrow and Joy
Open the window / Look all around and breathe deep / Climb through and live life
Flowers out in bloom / Now drooping, Snow upon them / Flowers come out soon
Working on Friday / Playing all day Saturday / Cleaning on Sunday
My week in review / No lacrosse, always hockey / Eat out crave local
Worm’s ascent to light / Excursion from dark dank earth / Robin’s Breakfast Joy
No snow, heavy coats / No piles of garbage-laced ice / No grief at their loss
