So, Why Hold an Inauguration?

The inauguration of Dr. Anne M. Kress as Monroe Community College’s fifth president will take place Saturday, April 10, 2010. Organizing an inauguration requires a significant amount of time, creativity, financial resources and teamwork from many members of the MCC family.

So, why hold an inauguration?

The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) offers this:

Reasons why Inaugurations are Important to an Academic Institution

1.      Inaugurations celebrate an institution’s history and reaffirm its specific mission.

2.      Inaugurations provide an environment for the celebration of the age-old tradition of learning.

3.      Inaugurations provide an opportunity to showcase the importance of the institution to its community—in all the various ways an institution’s leaders may choose to define the term community.

4.      Inaugurations offer an opportunity for total community outreach—to friends and to enemies alike.

5.      Inaugurations foster the coming together of family, healing of old wounds, and the renewal of ties that bind.

6.      Inaugurations represent new beginnings. They permit fresh starts when old paths have gone awry.

7.      Inaugurations bring to campus academic, government, and professional leaders whose visits lend prestige to the institution.

8.      Inaugurations attract media coverage offering opportunities for the college or university as a total entity to position itself favorably.

9.      Inaugurations enable new presidents to publicly establish new institutional goals.

10.  Inaugurations force new presidents to write inaugural addresses in which they set forth their institutional visions and priorities for the benefit of all who must now march to the beat of a different drummer.

We need your help to plan the installation and associated events celebrating Dr. Anne Kress’s inauguration as MCC’s president. Watch tomorrow’s Tribune for details on volunteer opportunities.
