NACUA Virtual Seminar "Dealing with Distressed and Suicidal Students: Legal and Policy Issues"

The offices of the President and the Vice President of Students Services are co-sponsoring the NACUA Virtual Seminar "Dealing with Distressed and Suicidal Students: Legal and Policy Issues" and would like to invite the College community to attend this presentation.

Each year, thousands of college and university students attempt suicide, and experts estimate that 1,100 die.  Distressed and suicidal students pose serious challenges on campus.  Their problems engulf institutional legal counsel, campus counselors, medical center and residence hall staff, fellow students, and family members.

An Overview of Student Suicide and Attempted Suicide:  Frequency and Theories of Liability
Shin v. MIT:  An Examination of the Case, the Trial Court Decision and Its Implications
Related Issues in Student Attempted Suicide Cases (including ADA, Privilege and FERPA issues)
Medical Withdrawal and Re-Admission Policies and Related Documentation
Possible Best Practices and Policies in Dealing with Distressed or Suicidal Students from a Legal Perspective
