TRS 080 - Foundations for Survey of Mathematics

3 Credits

A special studies course intended to be a reinforcement of numeracy and basic algebra skills aligned with MTH 150 course objectives. It is intended for students who need MTH 150 as the terminal mathematics course in their programs, but place at Mathematics Level 2 or 3, and who are ENG 101 ready. This course must be taken concurrently with MTH 150. Topics include, but are not limited to, a review of percentages, decimals, and fractions; a review of geometry; application problems using real world examples; practice reading graphs and tables; practice using the order of operations; an overview of properties of exponents; an overview of proportions including conversions; an examination of the real number system properties; and practice using formulas and solving for a variable in a formula. Three class hours per week; three fee hours; three imputed credits; no earned credits.

Prerequisite(s): MCC Level 2 Math Placement or higher, or TRS 092 with a grade of C or better. Also, ENG 101 Placement. Co-Requisite(s): MTH 150.

Course Learning Outcomes
1.Demonstrate number sense by ordering real numbers.
2.Predict reasonable solutions by utilizing rounding and estimation.
3.Perform arithmetic operations on real numbers including the order of operations.
4.Apply real number properties including but not limited to the distributive, associative and commutative properties.
5.Express percentages as decimals or fractions and vice versa.
6.Read and interpret graphs and tables.
