Friends and colleagues in the English and Philosophy Department recently became aware that Professor Emerita of English and Philosophy Lesta C. Wren passed away peacefully on November 29, 2019 in Greenville, South Carolina at the age of 91. A private memorial service was held.
Mrs. Wren was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Carl, who passed away in 2013. In 2014, she moved to South Carolina to be closer to her family. She is survived by her four children, seven grandchildren and a great-grandson.
A founding faculty member, Mrs. Wren helped MCC welcome its first class of students in September 1962. According to her obituary, "she taught literature and English composition and guided students through the complexity of Shakespeare's plays ... [she] especially enjoyed teaching women's studies courses. She particularly valued adult students who, in returning to college after working and raising families, brought unique life experiences and perspectives to the classroom. She also dearly cherished her many professional and personal friendships."
In 1984, Mrs. Wren received the Dr. Wesley T. Hanson Award for Excellence in Teaching. She retired in 1993 after 31 years of educating and inspiring MCC students.
She will be deeply missed by her colleagues and former students.
