What is an Understandable Math Session?
Led by Carlo Atene, the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center Lead Mathematics Tutor, this program has been developed to support students’ success in MTH-096, MTH-098, MTH-104, MTH-160, and MTH-165. Each of the courses are aligned with a course specific 1-hour session each week, running through the end of the semester. The individuals leading each session are there to facilitate learning (not teach). The goal is to build an interactive environment where students can interact with material in a safe space.
Sessions will be built around 3 components:
- Soft skill focus on topics, such as how to study and exploring how each student thinks.
- Core skill relative to each course, such as reading word problems and fractions.
- Open forum. While it may be necessary to teach some content here, the goal is to get students to help each other.
