Passing of Math Adjunct Instructor Michael Atkinson
I am sad to inform college community members that Michael Atkinson, former adjunct math instructor, passed away earlier this month. A dedicated educator, Professor Atkinson taught in the Rochester City School District for more than 20 years. Prior to his RCSD career, he served as a math teacher in the U.S. Peace Corps, teaching middle school math in southern Africa while helping to construct school classrooms.
Professor Atkinson began teaching at MCC in 2010, the year of his retirement from Wilson Magnet High School. He understood that non-math majors could be intimidated by the subject and unaware of the technology that could help them. He worked hard to convince students that he understood where they were -- and that he could help them succeed. His dedicated enthusiasm was an asset to the department and to the College.
