Free Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Training

With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, it is a good time to give a friendly reminder that SUNY continues to offer free Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) mental health crisis intervention training. This training teaches you three simple steps for responding when someone mentions suicidal thoughts or shares that they are struggling with suicidal ideation. It takes less than an hour, and could ultimately save a life.

Just like CPR, QPR is meant to save lives by teaching us all how to respond in those critical moments of crisis.

  • QPR training is designed to teach participants how to recognize someone who may be in emotional distress or having suicidal thoughts, and how to appropriately engage and connect that person to resources that can help.
  • Anyone can practice QPR in any setting, and it is appropriate in all relationships.
  • QPR does not require clinical training, only a willingness to listen, care, and help!

Please refer to the “Free QPR Training Available” tab under "Suicide Intervention" on the Counseling website for information on how to access the training.
