Build Sustainability into Your Life - Safer Cleaning Products

Many household cleaners contain toxic compounds that can irritate eyes, throat, and lungs and potentially cause longer term health issues. These chemicals also leach into our environment where they may be toxic to aquatic life and wildlife. There are safer alternatives for cleaning.

  • Buy products that have Safer Choice-Meets U.S. EPA Safer Product Standards on the label.
  • Select products that DO NOT have the words CAUTION, WARNING, DANGER or POISON on the label.
  • Use ingredients you have at home for cleaning (see link above for specific directions):
    • Baking soda for cleaning tubs and sinks.
    • Baking soda with vinegar for cleaning drains.
    • Baking soda with liquid dish soap for cleaning toilets.
    • Vinegar and water and a lint-free cloth or newspaper for cleaning windows and mirrors.
