Tech Tip: Bookmarks are Your Friends!

Bookmarks are a web browser feature that you can use to save a web site’s URL address for future reference. They save time, allowing you to quickly return to a site or often used page without having to search for it or type in the URL again.

Sometimes we get too many bookmarks, so finding the correct one can be challenging. The answer is to cleanup, update, and organize your bookmarks.

  • Look through your bookmarks – if you have not visited one for some time, delete it or add it to a “cleanup” folder.
  • Click on those bookmarks that you do not use a lot – are they still valid? Sometimes web sites change and that page you bookmarked simply is not there anymore--another candidate to delete.
  • Use folders to organize your bookmarks into categories.
    • In Chrome, Right-click on the bookmarks bar then click on the “Add Folder” option.
    • Click on the New Folder button, type in your category name, then click Save.
  • Remove duplicates – we all sometimes bookmark a website more than once since we simply forgot or could not find the original bookmark!
  • Use short names for your folders or remove the text (right-click and select edit) and just leave the favicon so they are all visible on your bookmarks bar

Getting Started with Bookmarks:

  • To create a bookmark – browse to the website page you wish to bookmark, then:
    • In Firefox: In the toolbar at the top of the screen, click the Star. Select the location. Click Save.
    • In Chrome: In the toolbar at the top, click the Star next to the address bar. Select the folder. Click Save.
    • In Edge: In the toolbar at the top, click the Star at the top right. Pick your location. Click Done
  • Do not forget to back up your bookmarks! In Chrome, Firefox, and Edge you can export bookmarks. Name and save this file to your OneDrive or U-drive.

Check these bookmarks to be sure you have the correct/current URL:
