Passing of Matthew Hachee, Associate Professor in English and Philosophy

It is with sadness that I inform the College community of the passing of Matthew Hachee, associate professor in the English and Philosophy Department, on Monday, May 15, 2023.

He joined MCC as an instructor in 2003 and was promoted to the rank of assistant professor five years later. He achieved associate professorship in 2013.

Professor Hachee had an innate ability to clearly explain complex abstract ideas and make a complicated topic accessible for students in his introductory-level classes. His energy and enthusiasm in the classroom were invigorating and infectious.

“Matt was a champion for students, always, and sparkled in the classroom. His leadership of MCC's Honors Institute helped foster exciting innovations in curriculum and inspired a whole generation of dedicated faculty. Matt was a thinker, a teacher, a philosopher,” said colleague Maria Brandt.

In 2008, he was honored with the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award for his outstanding commitment and contribution to his students and colleagues.

Professor Hachee was a valuable contributor not only to his department but to the entire College. His service to MCC included being a founding member of the Sixth Act and the Scholars’ Day Committee, the latter receiving the League’s Innovation of the Year Award under his leadership as co-chair. Additionally, he was active in the Honors Institute; the Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Project; and the Faculty Association for many years.

Professor Hachee earned two degrees in philosophy – a master’s from Michigan State University and a bachelor’s from Adrian College.

He is survived by his wife, Regina Fabbro, and three children.

Visitation will be held at Miller Funeral Home (3325 Winton Rd.) from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 23. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Catholic Church (43 Gebhardt Rd., Penfield) at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 24. A former student and friend has started a GoFundMe page to support his family; please consider making a donation to help his family through this difficult time.

MCC extends condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and students. We are grateful for his many contributions and service to MCC.
