TCC: Recognizing Math Department Adjunct Faculty

The Mathematics Department is fortunate to have exceptionally talented and dedicated adjunct faculty. We currently have about 30 members, four of whom are new to MCC this year with three more coming on board for Fall 2023. Several members have been with us for 20 years or more, with our longest-serving currently in his 38th year. Among their ranks are retired Math Department members, active and retired high school math teachers, full-time faculty at area colleges, and MCC professional staff. In addition to teaching for MCC, many are also adjunct faculty at colleges such as SUNY Brockport, SUNY Geneseo, Hobart College, Finger Lakes CC, Genesee CC, Onondaga CC, St. John Fisher University, Nazareth College, University of Rochester, RIT, Roberts Wesleyan University, and even a college in Tennessee. Several also teach in the Transitional Studies and Engineering Science and Physics departments and/or serve as tutors in the TAAC. Nearly all of our MTH courses have been taught by adjunct faculty, from Elementary Algebra to Statistics to Calculus III and higher. Our adjunct faculty embrace the use of technology to enhance their teaching, for example utilizing Smart Boards, tablet PCs, and iPads to capture and post their classroom lectures in Brightspace; and high-impact practices such as making their courses writing intensive and assigning collaborative projects. Many recognize the value of a flipped classroom and have created video lectures for students to view outside of class, freeing up class time for students to engage in activities that involve higher-order thinking. Some adjunct faculty even enroll as students in our math courses so they can be better prepared to teach them if the need arises.

The Mathematics Department and MCC are indeed fortunate to have these hard-working and caring individuals serving our students!
