Optical Systems Technology Students and Faculty Participate in the Brighton Festival of Ideas

MCC Optical Systems Technology students and faculty presented a Color Science classroom to third through eighth graders at the Brighton Festival of Ideas at Brighton High School, on March 2.  The workshop explored the hidden color world of white light through guided experimentation. Participants discovered the right tool to split thermal white light into the colors of the rainbow, learned how different light bulbs create white light via simple spectroscopy, and created nearly any color imaginable using red-green-blue color mixing.

This classroom was led by a team of students from the MCC Optics Club and advised by Professor Greg Savich.  Participating MCC Optics Club members included: Abbey Helfer, Esther Dykstra, Alyssa Almekinder, Sam Lamendola, Eric Siverd, and Gabriel Zimmerman.

MCC’s Optical Systems Technology program prepares students for optics and photonics careers through hands-on, remote, online, and hybrid course options that can lead to a stackable one-year Certificate, two-year AAS Degree, and pathways to bachelor’s degrees at select universities. The program is currently recruiting students of all ages who enjoy working with their hands, making things, solving problems, and improving people’s lives.
