Passing of Professor Emeritus Maynard North, English

The MCC family mourns the passing of Maynard North, professor emeritus in the English Department, at age 99 on Sept. 5, 2023.

Professor Emeritus North joined MCC in 1962 as associate professor of English and later added German courses to his teaching schedule in the departments of English and Modern Languages.

He was promoted to the rank of professor in 1968 and began serving as English Department chair a year later. During his tenure, he was appointed assistant dean of Arts and Humanities and served in that role for two years before returning to teaching full time for the English Department.

His service to the College included having chaired the Academic Standards and Grievance committees.

Upon hjs retirement in 1979 after 17 years of service, he was accorded the rank of professor emeritus.

Professor Emeritus North earned a master’s degree in German and a bachelor’s in English and German, both from University of Vermont.

Prior to joining MCC, he served three years in the Army and Air Force.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lois, and is survived by two sons, Paul (and his wife Barbara) and Kevin; daughter Jennifer; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Interment is in the Marion National Cemetery in Indiana.
