Military-Affiliated Students in your Classrooms: What you need to know!

Did you know we have more than 300 military-affiliated students on campus? You might have students from any of these groups in your classes:

  • Veterans who have served in the active military, naval, or air service, and who were discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable.
  • Students who are currently serving on active duty
  • Students who are currently in the National Guard or Reserve Units who have drill requirements
  • Students who are former members of the armed forces
  • Students who are entitled to benefits from a family member (spouse or child)

All of these students have different needs and require different support from faculty and staff. Attached to this announcement are two handouts to help you work with this special population: one is designed to help you understand what it means when a student tells you that he or she has a drill assignment and the other has best practices for working with military-affiliated students in the classroom.

Finally, save the date for a full day Supporting Transitioning and Returning Service members (STARS) conference: June 10th. There will be updated training, special guests, and lunch!
