Attention all professional and faculty advisors: TRS 100 and TRS 200 no longer offered

Reminder to all advisors: New for spring 2024:

TRS 090 Academic English Essentials with TRS 091 Academic English Essentials Lab

The Transitional Studies reading and development English committee created a new one semester sequence to replace the former two semester sequence of Transitional Studies reading and writing courses. Incoming students for the spring 2024 semester will be the first class to register for this new sequence.

The new course, TRS 090 is a one-semester course with a corequisite lab (TRS 091) that replaces TRS 100 Integrated Reading and Writing I and TRS 200 Integrated Reading and Writing II and prepares students for success in ENG 101 College Composition with TRS 099. It simplifies the developmental sequence from two courses into one and prepares students for success in ALP, the corequisite model.

All new students who would have previously placed into TRS 100 or TRS 200 should register for both TRS 090 and 091.

Note: Section numbers on TRS 090 and TRS 091 pairs match. (E.g. TRS 090-001 is paired with TRS 091-001)

The placement criteria is as follows:

  • High School GPA 70% or below

  • Previous placement into TRS 100 or 200 without successful completion of those courses.

  • Accuplacer Next Gen Reading (below 250) and

  • Accuplacer Next Gen Writing (below 262)

Student placements have been revised to reflect the new courses, TRS 090 and TRS 091. At the time of this announcement, work is still being done to revise the prerequisite block found in Degree Works to reflect these changes.

Returning students may have TRS 100 or TRS 200 credit. Here is a flow chart for how to transition students with TRS 100 or TRS 200 credit into the new single level course model:

  1. Students who passed TRS 100: Should register for TRS 090 and TRS 091, unless the student met the acceleration criteria into ENG 101 with TRS 099 (i.e. Student completed TRS 100 with a grade of B or better)

  2. Students who passed TRS 200 with a C or better: Should register for ENG 101, with instructor ability to recommend TRS 099 if needed (a current practice)

  3. Students who scored less than a C or who failed TRS 100 or TRS 200: Should register for TRS 090 and 091

TRS 090 Academic English Essentials
