End of Academic Year Message

Dear College Community,

The winding down of the academic year offers the opportunity for us to reflect on all we have accomplished together. Below you will find a message I shared with our Faculty Senate that highlights just some of your collective good work. The two questions that we received in lieu of our May Town Hall are also addressed in the document.

I frequently share that excellence is everywhere at MCC and this year was no exception. I am proud of the work we do on behalf of our students and hope that the summer offers you the opportunity to relax and replenish for the academic year ahead. Thank you for all you do.

Dear MCC Faculty Senate President Dr. Nayda Pares-Kane and Senators:

Colleagues, thank you for your service and commitment to the MCC Mission, Vision, and Values, and for your collective voices in creating our College’s first-ever Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion statement, which amplifies our shared commitment to the belongingness of ALL members of our dynamic learning community. In Vision2027, the College’s strategic plan, we have clearly articulated our unwavering commitment to working, serving, respecting, and supporting one another—"Together As One” affirms our dedication to embracing and recognizing all the individual and collective identities represented within the diverse populations that exist at MCC.

Your 2022-23 leadership contributions to the College in service and cooperation with the Faculty Senate helped us to achieve tremendous progress on our five strategic directions within Vision2027. I want to acknowledge and highlight a few of these valuable contributions and share our gratitude for your dedication and hard work to the 2022-2027 strategic plan.

  • Together As One – Working together, the Faculty Senate and the Executive Leadership Team’s (ELT) conducted 15 Executive Directors and above searches to fill critical positions at the college. You created and communicated a new statement of endorsement for the LGBTQIA+ community, which aligns with our mission, vision, and our new MCC DEI statement. We affirm both statements.
  • Student-Centered College – You further supported and strengthened DEI, access, and success efforts of the College by working tirelessly as a unit to move, approve and thoroughly discuss curriculum changes as required by the new SUNY General Education policy with special emphasis on a new institutional learning outcomes statement. Another sign of the strength of our oneness is your contributions to our selection to Aspen Institute’s Unlocking Opportunity: The Post-Graduation Success and Equity project, representing 1 of 10 community colleges across the nation and the only college representing New York.
  • Enrollment Reimagined – You fostered and promoted faculty professional development aimed at student success outcomes and strengthening a sense of belonging by emphasizing the importance of DEI in and outside the classroom by reinforcing student persistence, providing training that emphasized effective and open communication and bolstering participants awareness of inclusive language, which ultimately strengthens the story of MCC. These efforts serve to enhance the execution of strategic enrollment and marketing strategies at the College.
  • Community Engagement and Partnerships – You partnered with the Foundation and the grants office to secure crucial funding for programs, initiatives, and student success. In addition, you have collaborated with our community partners to respond to the workforce demands of our region by developing and adapting programs to address areas of greatest need.
  • Institutional Effectiveness, Efficiency, and Sustainability – You conscientiously and thoroughly analyzed the structure of the Faculty Senate, leading to changes in Bylaws that create a governance model that more accurately reflects the constituency served by the faculty senate, and your analysis of enrollment in programs and changes in program sizes led to a systemic change and improved representation of programs.

Your roles as public servants, educators, leaders, and Faculty Senators require a commitment to service beyond self for the good of our College and the community we serve. We are the community’s college. Our work transcends boundaries defined by job titles, departments, programs, and divisions. We represent the best of our community--for our community. You are ambassadors on behalf of our college for the collective good work, and you demonstrated excellence throughout the academic year.

On behalf of the College, members of the Executive Leadership Team, the MCC Board of Trustees, and myself, thank you for your service and unwavering commitment to MCC’s mission and vision and for reinforcing our values through your work, volunteerism, and interactions with one another. Congratulations on another job well done throughout the 2022-2023 academic year. I wish you peace, safety, and prosperity in the days ahead.

Sincerely,

DeAnna R. Burt-Nanna
