Supporting Student Parents through Course Information Sheets

The Single Mom Learners Design Challenge core team (Kim DeLardge, Renee Dimino, and Medea Rambish) has been exploring possible student parent language for course information sheets.

Some MCC faculty included this language in their course information sheets for the spring 2024 semester, “If you are a parenting student, feel free to communicate with me if your role as a parent is impacting your success in our course as I may be able to connect you with resources.”

The University of Michigan suggests supporting caregivers by letting them know their rights and the support available on campus. Here are some suggested statements from the University of Michigan:

"If you are a pregnant, parenting student, or primarily responsible for providing care for a loved one or family member, and you are in need of any accommodations, please let [me] know at your earliest convenience. You may also reach out to (insert campus resource) for resources and community support."

“I recognize the unique needs of Student Caregivers. If you are a caregiver and need additional accommodations to be successful in this class, please contact me! The University of Michigan CEW+ has information and resources available to support you.”
