MCC Foundation Annual & Micro Grants

Thank you to all who applied for MCC Foundation grants in 2022-2023! More than $14,000 in grants was awarded to the following Monroe Community College faculty and staff in order to take the MCC learning experience to the next level. Please see the MCC Foundation Grants webpage for more information on when and how to apply for these types of grants in 2023-2024.

Lock and Rebar Cutting Skills Station - $3,000
Joshua Henneman, Public Safety Training Center

By adding another tool to our toolbox, more specifically a New Rebar and Lock cutting skills station, we are confident that our students will learn to work as a member of a team and the necessary skills to accomplish the goal of forcible entry. The high energy from working together will foster not only the various practical skills that are required to be successful as an emergency responder but also professional skills such as communication, results focus, and analysis and decision making for themselves, their co-workers, and those that they are trying to assist.

Anthropology Laboratory Equipment - $1,217
Daniel Tyree, Anthropology/History/Political Science/Sociology

The field of Anthropology relies heavily on physical materials (e.g. skeletons, artifacts, etc.) to better understand our evolutionary past and our culturally and biologically relative present and future. We only recently gained access to a lab space, but we don’t own any lab equipment. With the Foundation’s help, we will be able to purchase those much-needed items, thus offering our students a fully immersive educational and scholarly experience. The equipment will be used to allow students to interact with the physical materials that inform our understanding of the past, present, and future.

Self-Care Closet - $2,688
Nicole Reinholtz, EOP

A Self-Care Closet for students is imperative for success. Students who feel stable and secure with the necessary items for daily self-care/living are more apt to attend class, seek assistance, create relationships with peers and faculty, and feel a sense of belonging to campus. Students who have access to a Self-Care Closet will worry less about not having the necessary items, as well as how they will find the means to access these items. As a result of the Self-Care Closet, students will experience an increased sense of self-worth which will in turn increase academic success and retention.

AEDs for Public Safety Responding to Medical Emergencies on Campus  - $3,098
Katie Ferguson, Public Safety Training Center

The Public Safety Department currently has two AEDs that are in portable medical bags that the officers bring with them for immediate access when responding to emergency medical calls. This grant application is to request two additional AEDs to increase the amount of portable medical bags for Public Safety staff to use when responding to medical emergencies on campus. This will enable more Public Safety officers to have immediate access to potentially lifesaving AEDs in areas where AEDs may not be readily accessible such as roadways, parking lots, and areas of buildings where AEDs are not located. Having immediate access to AEDs reduces the need to spend time locating an AED elsewhere on campus, during cardiac arrest medical emergencies where every minute counts.

Downtown Campus Kid Friendly Furniture and Kid Kits - $1,000
Kimberly DeLardge, Student Services – Downtown Campus

Brighton Campus Kid Friendly Furniture and Kid Kits - $1,000
Medea Rambish, Academic Foundations

Many of our students are parents, specifically single mothers who often lack childcare and need to bring their children with them to appointments. It is often distracting and at times embarrassing for the student who may have to entertain, quiet, discipline or distract their child while they get their academic tasks done. This project would provide a kid friendly environment and allow the parents to have a better-quality experience while they are here at MCC.

Promoting Healthy Lifestyles in the ACE@MCC Program - $1,397
Jean McCrumb, Student Services – Downtown Campus

Food preparation and cooking skills are important for individuals with disabilities for independent living. Additionally, nutritional knowledge, food preparation and cooking skills are important because people with intellectual disability are more likely to have health problems than people without disability. A healthy lifestyle incorporates several components, including healthy eating. Promoting healthy eating habits and teaching real-life food preparation and cooking skills will also result in empowering students by assisting them in developing greater independence and self-determination.

Student Sampling for Bsal Fungus in Salamanders - $800
Richard Stevens, Biology

Amphibians like salamanders are under multiple threats and none is greater than the Bsal fungus. It is imperative that this fungus be detected as soon as possible if and when it makes it to North America. This grant will provide students a hands-on learning experience with relevant and important issues in the field of biology. It will also provide the potential for student presentations and publications based on the detection of the Bsal fungus, or the determination that the fungus has not made it to our area.
