Statement on Supreme Court Affirmative Action Decision

Thursday’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court is one that is contrary to the mission of SUNY and does not reflect the mission and values that we hold dear to us at Monroe Community College. We concur with and affirm the statement by Chancellor King that, despite the intent of race-based admission, “Black and Latino/a students, along with other groups, are still underrepresented across institutions of higher education as students, faculty members, and administrators.” We are not immune from these challenges at Monroe Community College and our mission challenges us to not only vehemently oppose the impact of this ruling but reinforces our need to be a beacon of hope for those who deserve equal access to an education that allows them to earn a living wage or pursue academic credentials that allow them to become productive citizens of our county, our state, and our nation.

We stand in solidarity with SUNY and reaffirm our steadfast commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  We oppose any efforts that seek to undermine an individual’s right to bring their full selves to our institution, where belongingness and individual identities are valued and celebrated.  We hold true to our values of community, inclusiveness, integrity, excellence, empowerment and stewardship.

We have work to do. We will continue to preserve and advance diversity as we comply with the new law. Our communities are strengthened when institutions like Monroe Community College admit, educate, train, and graduate a diverse student body and workforce. Our work to ensure every student in our community has equal and equitable access to a college education continues, even during this challenging time in our nation’s history. And, Together As One, we can ensure that our college carries on as we enrich the lives of all that we serve.
