Day 6 of Gratitudes: Student Kudos to AHPS, Business, and Psychology

Start your day by enjoying student gratitudes about some of their wonderful professors in Anthropology, History, Political Science, Sociology, Business, and Psychology today.

Susan Belair, Sociology

  • Mrs. Belair is one of the most remarkable women that I have ever met. Her class is very knowledgeable, and not only that, but she also pushes you to exercise your mind to the fullest to understand fully what's going on in the world. The way she sets her class up is a clever way to make you use all of the MCC resources to further elevate your studies as well. I appreciate all of her hard work and also caring for her students.

Natasha Chen, Sociology (2 submissions)

  • Professor Chen always takes the time to ask questions and provide thorough feedback on my assignments and answer any of the questions I have promptly through email. She really encouraged me to consider my potential as a sociologist and I really admire the way she runs her online classes. I know she must be busy with grading and teaching other classes but I appreciate all the time and effort she puts into making learning about sociology smooth and fun!
  • (Faculty Submission) Kudos to Natasha Chen for working hard every day of her life to combat racism and inequity in general. Dr. Chen works tirelessly to root out the causes and effects of structural inequities, bring them to light, and collaborate toward solutions. She is scrupulous in her scholarship and courageous in her advocacy. Her integrity and efficacy are laudable, and we are fortunate to have her at MCC.

Joseph Scanlon, Political Science

  • Explains political science in an engaging manner providing continual class participation and explanation.

Bethany Gizzi, Sociology

  • (Faculty Submission) Kudos to Bethany Gizzi for working with the  Faculty Council of the MCC Faculty Association to provide a statement in the recent Faculty Association newsletter that affirms support of our LGBTQIA+ students, employees, and broader community and reaffirms the commitment to defend academic freedom and prohibit discrimination. NYSUT advocates for racial, social, economic, and environmental justice for all through the labor movement, and Bethany’s efforts are reflective of this ideal.

Sandra Kinel, Business

  • Professor Kinel is just wonderful in her interactions with us. She is very knowledgeable and is very willing to do all that she can to help us grasp, retain and apply the importance of Economics to our daily lives. I have had so much fun with this class, that I don't want to see it end. Professor Kinel is the primary reason.

Sherry Tshibangu, Business

  • I took two classes with Sherry this semester, she was a great professor who responded to emails in a timely manner and always tried her best to answer my questions.

Kathleen Borbee, Business

  • Professor Borbee has the most tedious classes however she is the most supportive professor I have ever had the chance to meet.

Wanda Willard, Psychology

  • Dr Willard has taken the time to not only hear my career goals, but also to act as a career advisor and life coach!  She has taken the time on several occasions to look at my goals and refer me to reading materials and much-appreciated advice. She has opened my eyes as well as educated me!

Andy Knapp, Psychology (2 submissions)

  • Dr. Knapp took the time during an office visit to walk through an app program that was to be used for Research Methods in Psychology. The app was for a research assignment. I was able to share the results with the rest of the group and they were very grateful.
  • Dr. Knapp is an amazing professor. He continuously keeps class engaging with interesting discussions. He also explains concepts thoroughly with real-world concepts.

Beth Wilson, Psychology

  • Dr. Wilson wrote a note on my test concerning my continuing education goals. This gesture was very considerate and after meeting with her, I had a different and better understanding of opportunities that I could pursue.

Rebecca Horwitz, Psychology

  • I have struggled a lot over the last two years. In September of 2021, I was an online student taking a PSY course with Professor Horwitz. I was living in an apartment in Brooklyn when Hurricane Ida flooded my apartment and left me and my fiancé (along with our dog) homeless. Luckily we were taken in by family and we made it out just in time.  Regardless the loss was devastating.
In addition to this, I am a healthcare worker who was working in CITYMD urgent care through the height of Covid. I was pulling 50+ hours a week as the only Medical Assistant in the facility. We saw over 200 patients daily in 12 hours while severely understaffed. I have never been so overworked and exhausted in my entire life.
When we first lost the apartment I reached out to all my professors to inform them of what had happened. Professor Horwitz responded to me immediately with so much compassion. caring, and understanding. She informed me that she was there to support me as I tried to push through the semester.
Unfortunately, it became too much as I was overcome by my depression and anxiety. I ended up quitting the semester.  I knew things were going sideways and really needed to work hard on building a new foundation for myself before I could think about school again. Somehow my partner and I managed to put our heads down and pull it together. Six months after losing nearly everything we were closing on our lovely little house in Connecticut.
Her, the dog, and I picked up the pieces and have had a beautiful fresh start here. We've even adopted a second dog. As things settled down and I felt stable again I decided to give the school thing another shot. Lucky for me I was re-enrolled with Professor Horwitz.
Not only did she remember me but she did not hesitate to share how happy she was to see me back in school. Choosing to try again was very intimidating and I really needed that validation. The semester is coming to a close but she has been there every step of the way.
There has not been a good grade unrecognized, or a bad grade without a note of encouragement. She clearly reads every assignment thoroughly and provides excellent feedback. She also keeps up with us students and makes sure to provide updates weekly so everyone knows what is expected.
In my time as a student, I have never had someone so dedicated to the success of their students. I feel like this level of genuine caring and attentiveness is so hard to achieve. It is even more incredible that she manages to do this in an online setting. Everything she has done and continues to really means so much to me. It has had a big impact on my confidence in myself as a student.
There is simply no professor who deserves to be recognized more than Professor Horwitz.
