Virtual Advising Professional Development - Get ready for priority advisement and registration

Priority advisement and registration begins on Monday, October 30. Advisment and Transfer Services and the Schools at MCC are pleased to offer workshops to help advisors get ready to advise students. Please join us for any of these workshops offered October 24 through October 26. RSVP is not required for any of the workshops.

Starfish Basics

Join us to learn the basics of Starfish! In this workshop, we will cover:

  • Calendar Management - Students can schedule their own appointments with you online, via Starfish, based on the availability you set up. Starfish will sync with your Outlook calendar
  • When and How to Raise a flag - What information is needed for the starfish responder to make a meaningful connection with the student
  • How to raise a referral to different resources that may benefit the student
  • How to raise Kudos

Advising for SAP Workshop

How do I effectively work with students who are not making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)? This session will help you answer that question! Degree Works will be utilized to identify and interpret students’ academic standing, how they got to that standing, and what requirements will need to be met to get them back into compliance. Best practices for advising in subsequent semesters will be discussed. Common themes that impact students’ academic progress will be shared, and available resources to support student success will be highlighted. An overview of the College’s SAP Policy, and the academic review process will be looked at in preparation for this discussion.

Health Related Program Information Session

This session will provide an overview of key advisement considerations and resources for MCC’s competitive health programs (Clinical Lab Technology, Dental Assisting, Dental Assisting Rapid Track, Dental Hygiene, Nursing, Radiological Technology and Surgical Technology). This workshop is intended for those newer to health-related advisement, but will also be useful to those with experience advising students in competitive health program pathways since there have been so many changes over the last few years.

Academic Advising Essentials Workshop

This workshop is designed to overview common scenarios and frequently asked questions regarding advisement. If you’d like a solid outline of the advisement process, this workshop is for you! Learn the basics with DegreeWorks, academic standing, math/English placement, major changes, Financial Aid Course Eligibility (FACE), advisement keys, transfer basics, and registration basics.

Transfer Advising Workshop

This workshop will explore the basic tools used to advise a student about transfer. We will review transfer planning resources on the myMCC portal as well as transfer tips that will assist students in creating an optional transfer plan.
